Reflection 1
I learned that this class will have a lot to do with computers, and with service hours. I didn’t expect that when I came in. I thought the only thing we were going to read chapters in the text books, read literatures, and study vocabulary. Some things I learned were new ways to study as well as what style of a learner I am. I thought it was pretty fascinating to read up on that. I also enjoy having to write the word of the day because it helps improve my vocabulary, and it gives me a challenge of trying to use the word at least once in the day. The diagnostic test was pretty interesting as well because it showed me what I don’t know, what I do know, and what I can improve on. Next week my guess is that we will be learning new vocabulary without having to use a dictionary. I believe we will learn a lot about context clues. I also think we will go over our reading and diagnostic tests.
Reflection 2
During this week I read chapter 2, and learned new and more improved ways to study vocabulary. I learned how to use context clue to help understand words better instead of looking up every word I don’t understand. I also worked on my reading lab some more. I realized that on the first week I was doing the assignments wrong, but I have fixed that. I also thought of what I might do for my future reading partner since on the syllabus it said that chapter 2 will be an important issue to teach to our reading partner. I also plan to ask about where to put this reflection because before I started working on this I went onto the website and only found the reflection number one. I’m not sure if I am supposed to put it in there or if the reflection spot just hasn’t been put up yet. The last thing I did this week is the word of the day, and I have been trying to use the word at least once in my everyday vocabulary.
Reflection 3
This week I spent mostly on my reading lab. I took the lextin pre-test, and missed three of the problems. I studied my mistakes, and attempted to understand why I was wrong and why the other answer fit better. Aside from spending the majority of my time on my reading lab I also started to figure out what my reading plan is. I have yet to find a reader and when I go into class I plan on figuring out certain restrictions for the person I must read to. I don’t know anyone who is younger than me so I want to make sure it is alright for me to use people that are about the same age as me since most of them are not taking a reading class so their information might be different. I plan to express how I feel and what my reading partner learned from this activity in my next reflection. I will read for both this and next week so I make up for what I missed.
Reflection 4
This week I met up with my reading partner for the first time on Thursday. We spent a couple minutes talking about vocabulary and helpful exercises to help understand certain words, and use context clues to understand words better. After that we spent about half an hour reading from her textbook for her English class, and after we spent another half an hour reading stories from my creative writing class. It was pretty useful since a lot of the stories used more advanced vocabulary. I also worked on the my reading lab, and read chapter 4. I was unsure if we would be reading chapter 5 next week or this week since we missed a week so I skimmed over the chapter. I have been doing the word of the day as well, and I’ve been trying to use the word of the day in the things I say or do. I attempted to use previous word of the days in my English essay that is going to be due soon.
Reflection 5
This week I reread chapter 5 since last week I only skimmed over it. It was very helpful to in developing organizational patterns, and I got a better understand of transitional words which is a technique I’ve never been good at in writing. I also met up with my reading partner again we spent about 15 minutes reading. We did a little preview of chapters 3 and 4. I spent a good amount of time on my reading lab, and I’m looking for ways to have more time to work on it. So far it seems like Thursday is the best day for me to work on it, but I will attempt to work on it other days. I try to do at least 2 hours a day, but I’m not sure how long I actually spend on it. I have also been keeping up with the word of the day.
Reflection 6
This week I had some troubles dealing with the word of the day. Whenever I clicked on Yesterday’s word, no matter what day it was, it kept showing the word being fallacy. In the next class I am going to see if this problem has been happening to anyone else, and if not how I can get the words that I am missing. Aside from that I didn’t get the time to meet up with my reading partner this week, so I just worked on making the mini lesson. Thankfully last week me and my reading partner were able to skim over the chapters for the lesson last week. Next week I’ll just make sure to actually give the lesson. I also was able to work on my reading lab, maybe not as much as I would’ve liked. Another thing I did this week was that I read over chapter 6 which was useful because in one of my classes I have to write an outline and chapter 6 talked about that.
Reflection 7
This week I had some troubles dealing with the word of the day again. Last week in class I talked to some of the other students and they admitted to having the same problems. That aside I was able to meet up with my reading partner again and she showed great signs of progressing and she was able to point out the main idea to me. I have noticed that when we first started to do this my partner didn't fully pay attention to her readings but now she does. I also was able to work on my a little on reading lab, but I am having trouble finding the time to work on it. Something else I did this week was that I read over chapter 7, but I didn't pay much attention to it like I should have.
Reflection 8
This week I read chapter 8 before class on Friday but also after class as well. In class I was able to learn what kind of reader I am. I found out from the activity that I read at an average speed which is good because if I read too slow then I forget important stuff from the beginning and if I read too fast I wouldn't actually learn anything because it would be like I skimmed over my reading. I also met up with my reading partner again we spent about 30 minutes reading. I couldn't spend any time in my reading lab, and I’m looking for ways to have more time to work on it. I have had a busy schedule and not much sleep so I haven't had much time to work on it. I have also been keeping up with the word of the day and trying to not miss any day because of the fallacy problem.
Reflection 9
This week I met up with my reading partner for the last time and we spent 30 minutes reading her textbook and talking about it. She has greatly improved on her focus and I think from now on she will make an attempt to stay interested in the things she reads. We also spent a couple minutes talking about vocabulary and I showed her my word of the day as well as the website to look at daily. I didn't get to work on my reading lab at home, but I was able to work on it in class which greatly helped. I also read chapter 9. I have been doing the word of the day as well, and I’ve been still trying to use the word of the day in the things I say or do. I once again attempted to use previous word of the days in my reasearch paper for my English class that is going to be due soon.
