Chapters 3 and 4
Types of reader:
1. Tacit reader- lack awareness of how they think when they read
2. Aware reader- they realize that they no longer understand the material, but have no strategies to fix it.
3. Strategic reader- use thinking and comprehensive strategies to understand and acquire knowledge
4. Reflective reader- They not only use thinking and comprehensive strategies to understand and acquire knowledge, but also reflect on their thinking.
3 stages of reading
1. Preview- Predict, Question, Activate Schemata, Establish Purpose
2. Integrate Knowledge- Predict, Picture, Relate, Monitor, Correct, Annotate
3. Recall- Review, Connect, React, Reflect, Evaluate
Previewing: Connecting with the material before actually reading it. (What do you already know about this topic?)
Schema: Like a file that holds all the knowledge you know about a subject.
Metacognition: Having the knowledge and having the awareness and thinking process for that knowledge
Recall: Remind yourself of what you just learned to make sure you know the content
Topic and Main Idea
Topic- Labels the subject, but does not give specific content on the passage
Main Idea- the point the author is trying to convey
Details
Major- Support the main idea and understanding of passage
Minor- amplify the major details
Summary- Brief statement about the passage that describes the main ideas and supporting details
